Acer ranks third in the US total PC market for the very first time

Global Press Conference -- Budapest, September 19, 2008 -- Acer increases its long track record of successes and leadership within the PC industry with significant results achieved during the first half 2008. According to the worldwide market data released by analyst firm, Gartner, Acer strengthened its third position in the total PC market (deskbased-, mobile-PCs and X-86 servers) and confirmed its second position in the notebook segment.

Data describing the performance of the total PC market in all regions indicates an average year-on-year growth of 14.69%, while Acer within the same context maintained excellent pace by growing almost four times as fast as the market (57.91%).

In the notebook segment, Acer further consolidated its second spot worldwide by recording 58.25% growth (1H 2007 vs. 1H 2008) backed by a 15.63% market share, while in the deskbound segment, where the market trend was almost flat, it increased unit shipments by 57.59% on a yearly basis and ranked fourth with a 5.10% market share.

Acer also showed solid performance in the tough US market, where it posted a 69.17% growth, the highest rate amongst the top 5 PC vendors, jumping to the third spot on the total PC market for the very first time. It ranked third for deskbound segment with an incredible 185.52% growth (market performance was negative: -6.79%) and fifth for notebooks with 9.9% market share and 30.29% growth.

In emerging markets such as Latin America, Acer reported steady growth for both desktop and mobile platforms. Desktop-wise, data are encouraging: with a three-digit growth (194.81%) Acer is heading straight towards the top 5 group of players.

"Globally, the PC market growth is driven by consumer demand for mobile products and mobility has always been Acer's focus," comments Gianfranco Lanci, CEO and President, Acer Inc. "The results we achieved in the first half of this year confirm that our investments on both R&D and marketing have provided Acer with a solid base for growth, and ensures we are ready to face any difficulties that may arise. Acer's exponential growth is a combination of an increase in brand awareness, consistency of our channel-based business model and fresh technology in all our products".
