Our Biodiversity Commitment

Biodiversity is a precious natural asset, and its protection is vital to ensure the long-term health of the global ecosystem and the survival of life on this planet. Acer’s global operations sites are mainly located in science and technology parks and general office buildings, away from any areas containing important or critical biodiversity. Nonetheless, to understand the potential impact of our operations on biodiversity, we are committed to:

Our "Biodiversity Commitment" was made in 2022 and has been approved by the Corporate Sustainability Committee, chaired by the Chairman of the Board of Directors, to initiate actions accordingly. The commitment was then further reviewed, approved, and supervised by Acer's Board of Directors in 2023. The actions starting from 2022 are described below. 
 

In our own operation

To effectively address biodiversity issues, we need to conduct risk assessments to understand the current situation, identify priority areas, set targets, and apply mitigation measures. In view of the international biodiversity risk assessment and target setting tools such as Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosure (TNFD) and Science-based Target for Nature (SBTN) and others are under development, so we first used the tool Discover Protected Areas and OECMs provided by Protected Planet to confirm that none of our global operations are located in important biodiversity sites. We further use the ENCORE tool to understand the environmental impacts of the industry (Computers & Electronics Retail) in which Acer operates, to assess the potential impacts and dependencies on natural capital assets, and to identify risks.

We have also included biodiversity as one of the themes in our global ESG Project Awards to raise awareness of biodiversity among Acer employees worldwide. A total of eight biodiversity-related projects are proposed for 2022 across Acer’s global operations, including beach cleanup activities in Singapore and Germany, desert sand cleanup activities in the Middle East, harvesting of native plant seeds in the U.S., whale research sponsorship in Spain, tree planting projects in the Middle East, and marine plant restoration project in Italy.

 Acer Italy has sponsored Marevivo Onlus' REPLANT project starting in 2021, aimed at reforesting the sea in areas threatened by human activities that have caused the disappearance of nearly 80% of algal forests. For every purchase of Aspire Vero computers, Acer donates funds to support this project. In 2022, a total of 15,000 euros were donated.  

In terms of supplier management 

We educated suppliers on the importance of biodiversity and non-deforestation at the 2022 Supplier ESG Communication Meeting, requested suppliers to plan early biodiversity risk assessments for their operational sites, and encouraged suppliers to develop forest conservation commitments or policies to jointly reduce the demand for deforestation in the supply chain.

Considering that Acer's operations itself are inherently low risk to biodiversity, we used the Biodiversity Risk Filter built by the World Wildlife Fund to assess the biodiversity-related risks of the final assembly suppliers and to gain a preliminary understanding of the physical and reputational risks of the final assembly suppliers.  

In terms of partnerships  

Acer participates in the Taiwan Nature Positive Initiative launched by the Business Council for Sustainable Development to gain a deeper understanding of international biodiversity trends and the expectations of stakeholders. 

In 2023, we participated in the "GRI 304: Biodiversity Revision Consultation Workshop" through this initiative to provide feedback from Acer's perspective in addition to getting an early grasp of the key points of the GRI revision.

Acer intends to publish its first TNFD-aligned disclosure report for its financial year 2025 outcomes in 2026.
