Environmental Management

Thorough implementation of Acer' Environmental, Health and Safety Management System keeps the corporation in line with our EHS policy by reducing the impact our products and operations have on the environment. It also helps us save energy and ensure appropriate treatment of waste, as well as raising the environmental awareness of employees. By realizing above objectives, we provide safe products and services and ensure our employees are healthy and safe in the workplace.

 

Environmental, Health and Safety Policy

Acer endeavors to achieve balanced development in economy, environment and society. We understand that all our products, services and activities have potential impact to the environment and community where we conduct business, so we are devoted to environmental protection. We are also dedicated to providing a safe and healthy workplace for employees believing that occupational health and safety is the foundation of sound and responsible business operations. We ensure all employees understand their roles and responsibilities and require our suppliers, service providers, contractors, outsourcing partners, logistics companies, mergers and acquisitions and value chain partners to abide by Acer' environmental, safety and health policy through life cycle management to jointly achieve our commitments to the environment and our health and safety performance.

When we respond to market demands and choose to further develop the organization through business expansion, we will conduct due diligence assessments on companies prior to mergers and acquisitions.

Acer' environmental, safety and health policy is as follows:
.Meet or exceed all applicable legal requirements, industry standards and voluntary agreements to which Acer subscribes.
.Improve resource productivity by promoting pollution prevention, energy efficiency and waste reduction.
.Carefully select raw materials and suppliers to provide safe and low environmental impact products.
.Strive to create a safe and healthful workplace and to prevent occupational injury and illnesses.

Environmental Objectives

 

Environmental Operation and Management

We implement stringent management of environment, health and safety (EHS), setting targets and action plans each year to continually improve EHS performance. We also strive to reduce the impact of business operations on the environment and community.

Sound Environmental, Health and Safety Management

Acer is a brand that operates under a global model, with our headquarters located in Xizhi. Acer' other Taiwanese branches, service centers, and distribution centers are all also normal office or industrial buildings.

We comprehensively follow the Acer EHS Policies, implementing thorough EHS management systems to achieve our goals and commitments in this regard. These include regular monitoring of adherence to and applicability of Acer standards to manage potential risks to people and the environment and the environmental impact of our products. A range of measures have been put in place to help ensure staff have a comfortable working environment that values health and safety.

In 2018, all of Acer' Taiwan business units (with the exception of Nanpiao, Kaohsiung) passed new ISO 14001:2015 environmentalmanagement system review and have continued to receive third-party certification. Some subsidiaries that have introduced ISOenvironmental management systems have similarly passed ISO 14001:2015 review.

In order to comply with the Acer Group' global strategy, we have made 2019 a year of training and education in occupational healthand safety management systems and ISO 45001 in our Taiwanese headquarters. The Group will also replace the existing OHSAS18001 occupational health and safety management system with ISO 45001.

 

Implementation and Continuous Improvement

Acer ensures EHS policies are put into practice according to ISO standards by regularly conducting internal and external audits. With the objective of prevention through inspection, defects found by auditors are documented for correction, ensuring that the inspection system serves as a reference for continual improvement.

Resource and Energy Management

Energy Management

The main source of energy consumption for Acer is electricity use in offices. To address this, we are actively pursuing the three main goals laid out below, as well as undertaking relevant planning and evaluation.

In 2017, Acer built a solar power plant with a total of four ground and rooftop arrays in the Aspire Park, generating about 3.5 million kWh of electricity each yearby estimation. In addition, Acer e-Enabling Data Center conducted a review of UPS equipment usage requirements and re-adjusted shutdown settings, saving approximately 1.752 million kWh per year.

 

To protect and live with the environment, we continue to explore a variety of energy saving opportunities. Given the fact that the primary source of electricity consumption in our offices is air conditioning and lighting,in 2018 we changed our air conditioning equipment in twooffice areas, including the Zhizun Building at Acer TaiwanAspire Park, and high-consumption lighting in six officeareas including our Xizhi headquarters, in addition toundertaking renovations at four office areas, includingXizhi, to make use of energy-saving lighting.

Waste Management

With no manufacturing facilities, the primary source of waste products for Acer is daily office operations. We continue to strengthen our waste product management, collecting statistics on garbage production, recycling, and waste IT equipment at our office locations around the world to stay on top of any changes and investigate potential improvement measures. In order to reduce trash levels, Acer Taiwan does not provide personal trash bins and works to promote the sorting of trash. During lunch breaks, trash bags for each category of trash, including food, are set up in stairwells, while on each floor and in staff rooms recycling bins are also available. In 2018, Acer Taiwan launched a series of plastic reduction activities to reduce waste andfacilitate sorting.

We encouraged our staff to bring their own green cutlery, cups, straws, and bagsto work and stopped providing personal trash cans in the office. Recycling bins were set up in thelobbies and break rooms, while trash sorting and food waste recycling bags were set up in thelobbies during lunchtime. Additionally, bottled water is no longer provided in conference areas.Through such management practices, we were able to achieve our recovery and recycling targets.Compared with 2017, we were able to reduce total trash by some 5,900 kilograms and increaserecycling by approximately 870 kilograms.

In compliance with our corporate environmental policy, we are committed to adherence withwaste product management legislation, industrial guidelines, and our own commitments. AcerTaiwan, for example, had its General Waste Disposal Committee organize for trash to betransported to local incinerators by manufacturers or local cleaning teams, and recyclables to bedispatched after sorting to recycling plants or local recycling vehicles. Business waste is primarilywaste batteries, light bulbs, cases, and scrap metal, which are disposed of by qualified contractorsafter collection to ensure that transportation and processing do not harm the environment.

Paper Reduction and Recycling

Given the severe impact on the ecosystem of forest destruction and the loss of biodiversity, AcerTaiwan' offices continue to use only copier paper with the PEFC mark to ensure that paper issourced from sustainably managed forests. We also promote the use of digital documents overhard copy, and encourage staff to reduce printing and use double-sided ormultiple-pages-per-sheet printing functions, as well as promoting paper recycling, and settingup paper recycling stations beside photocopiers to facilitate the recycling of paper. In terms ofdisposable paper items, we provide ceramic mugs for visitors in conference areas and inviteemployees to bring their own green cups to meetings to reduce the number of paper cups used.

Staff Transportation and Commuting

In order to reduce the impact of our staff' travel on the environment, we encourage them to carpool to and from work, prioritize public transportation, and teleconference rather than travel for off-site or overseas business.

In 2018: overall fuel consumption for business travel and overseas business flight mileage were approximately 9.8% and 15.6% lower respectively than in 2017.

Water Resource Management

With Acer' global business model primarily focused on product sales and customer service, with no involvement in production, thereare no large-scale water uses. The main need for water in office spaces comes from regular personal uses, with said water drawn frommunicipal sources and thus having no significant impact on water resources. Sewage is one of the main sources of wastewaterglobally. Our wastewater is discharged in accordance with local regulations into the local sewer systems and processed by localtreatment plants, thus posing no significant threat to the environment.

While Aspire Resort at Longtan has received a Gold LevelGreen Hotel certification from the Environmental ProtectionAdministration, we continue to explore other measures toreduce water usages, such as diverting wastewater from poolsinto collection for filtration and reuse, along with collectingand reusing air conditioning condensate and dehumidifierrunoff. In 2018, we took this a step further by applying forWater Footprint Labeling to demonstrate how much we valueour water resources.
